I was looking at Vermontensium's 1826 grading thread and didn't want to just bombard a grading thread with a bunch of newbie questions. So...

Can someone help me with N-1 number? I'm assuming it is one of the Newcomb numbers. I only found pics of 1,8 and 9 at coinfacts. I seen a couple of differences in the date, but I'm not sure what else to look at to distinguish the dies. I'm also assuming there are n-2 thru n-7?

The reason that I'm asking is because inquiring minds want to know! That, and the fact that I just recently seen an 1826 (also probably F-12'ish) where the 18 seemed tilted strongly to the right. Is this a variety worth a closer look?

Got a link so I don't have to search everywhere for the picture? I have no idea where his grading thread is.

Oh and all of the 1826 Newcomb varieties ARE pictured on Coinfacts, but for some reason there aren't direct hyperlinks to them. But if you start on the Newcomb-1 link just above the picture of the N-1 is a hyperlink for Next Variety. If you keep choosing that you can step through all the 1826 varieties 1 - 9. If you want to jump to one directly, go up to the address bar and change the last part of it from
1826_large_cent_n9.htm to what ever n you want (1, 2, 3,....9)

Thanks Conder101. Looking at the various dates, and if I recall correctly, I believe it looked very similar to N-5 with the shifted 18 and I believe the 6 was a little higher than the rest of the date. I think it was around $60. Worth it?

OK looked at the picture, N-6. Key feature is the point of leaf below the second S in STATES. On the coin in question it is below the right side of the S. On N-1, 3, 4, and 7 it is a little past the right side. On 8 it is halfway between the S and O. On 5 it is almost to the O. On 9 it is between the center and the right edge of the S. On N-6 is is below the right edge of the S.

On the obv look at star 6 at the point of the Coronet. On the coin in question the star point just right of the point of the coronet.

On 1, 3, and 9 it points right at the point of the coronet. On 4, 5 and 7 it points well right of the point. On 8 it points definitely left of the point of the coronet. So both sides match N-6.

Thanks! With those diagnostics, the one I was looking at was definitely N-5. So, is this a variety I should take a closer look at?

the N-5 (if I am not mistaken) is a R2 coin so its a pretty common variety where I doubt the variety will bring much of a premium if any.
