Hi Everyone. I have 2 1986 pennies (non-magnetic)with very similar wear. Both were taken from circulated rolls. However the color on each coin is noticeably different as if the materials were different. Unfortunately my scanner doesn't entirely show this but both coins were scanned at the same time. The coins show the same color difference equally on both sides of each coin.

My question is what accounts for this? I also have the same situation in 2009 (both magnetic, one is almost pink like most new coins, the other is almost an orange). Could one be a circulated Proof? Does the "frost" age the coin differently?

Thanks

If they are in the same environment, proofs and uncirculated coins will indeed patinate in the same way. However, proofs are usually packaged in some way and so will patinate differently and usually slower. Some proofs are airtight encapsulated, and so should not patinate at all.

However, since you are taking them from circulated rolls, it is almost certain that they have not been subjected to the same environment. So, they will tone differently.
