Hello,

I'm thinking of starting a coin collecting class at my local community center. I have already put a proposal in. My question is whether or not this is a crazy idea?

Thanks,
Rich

What's the worst that can happen; you meet some interesting people? Just don't bring your whole collection there to share.

I agree, share all of your knowledge, but be very careful about sharing your collection, both physically and descriptively.

It is only crazy if you are not going to enjoy it. Consider whether or not it is going to be a lot of work. Is the reward of sharing your knowledge going to be greater than the effort?

I think such things are fantastic ideas. If I were you I would try to stipulate a class for adults and one for kids. Even the kid one should have parents present.
1. The great thing about such a class would be to educate people as to what is really going on in the Coin World. Not just things they hear from someone that just blabs.
2. You could possibly be indoctrinating someone that in the future might become a coin expert, coin book writter, also a teacher of coins.
3. The more people that collect coins the more valuable your own coims become. Price and demand make that work since the more people want something, the more it is worth.
4. If you watch this and other coin forums you would read many times similar questions due to the poster just not knowing. Such a class as you propose would help those also.
Those are just some of the things I say are great about what you propose.
Now here is a few things to remember.
5. If the people you have in those classes know you, they also know you are a coin collector. This would mean that you may well have coins in your house.
6. If those people in the class know you and where you live, your presenting a possible home invasion someday. Not necessarily those in the class, but the people they tell about your great wealth.
7. Such a class would mean to bring examples. Again, the more you bring and the more they are worth, read 5. and 6. above.
8. Not sure where you live but I suggest not having such a class at night. And if you do, make sure your not followed home.

One last thing. If you do give such a class, make sure you mention me as a suggestor of topics and things.

I also think it's a GREAT idea!

I recommend bringing different graded coins of the same type and some reference books about that type each night.

Maybe have a different coin type each night of class.

Encourage the attendees to bring in the coin type you are going to address that night and whatever reference material they have.

Anticipate a lively discussion.

I would think this would be a LOT of fun!

Downside:

Security.
Maybe arrange for people to have escorts to their cars if it's not in a secure area?

And finally: Tell everyone you keep all your coins (and they should too) in a safe deposit box all the time and never at home.

In such a class you may want to stress security. Many hobbies are rather safe from criminals but coins to a criminal are just money to be stolen and spent.

I think it's a fantastic idea. Would your target audience be kids or adults? The community center I'm familiar with focuses mainly on kids programs, you might have a harder time attracting an adult audience?

I forgot to tell you that there's alot of experience just down the road from you in Colorado Springs. You might want to check with the ANA to see if they have some sort of package they'll give you to help you get started.

Any kind of class is a win/win for collecting; if presented properly.

you might also consider incorporating some short rap tunes into your lessons. don't worry too much about grammar.

Hello,

Thanks for all of the awesome replies and support but now I'm wondering if I have the knowledge to actually do this, I have only been collecting for 2 years (since October 2008.) I only have limited interests and experience. Would an outline help me? The lady from the community center sounded like she was going to setup a class for March 2011. Help.....

Thanks,
Rich

At two years of collecting, you'll have two years more experience than anyone else there. 2 1/2 by the time the class starts. So, my advice is be humble, but don't be worried.

I'm going to presume that the ANA and/or PNG probably has class outlines and/or materials that would be helpful, you might want to contact them.

People are always learning, so even though you only have 2 years experience, you can impart some great info on others and maybe somebody can add to your knowledge base through the class. It is not like it is some college course where the students expect the teacher to have a vast and intricate knowledge on a subject. I would think people would merely expect you to be organized, informative, and enthused. It would be more like a group learning and helping each other with you leading them. No matter how much experience sombody has, they can always learn something new.
