Hi. I keep seeing this in ads where sellers say they just bought a hoard or grouip of coins from and "old time collector" or "collection." Can anyone help me out as to what does this mean? Does it mean that the coins are raw/ unslabbed?

I just finished selling an "old time collection". They quit collecting in the early 1980's. Yes, that means the coins were all raw, there were no grading companys until around 1986. That's why grading companys changed collecting. Until then, you had to grade for yourself, spot cleaned, whizzed, polished, altered, ATed coins yourself. Talk about buyer beware.....

It's supposed to mean "fresh new materials not picked through by dealers" or something like that, but it's really just a lot of hype.

Another term with similar meaning is "from estate."

Maybe. But in many ways, it was also more rewarding and more financially "within reach" for those who invested their time and money in knowledge and education before "investing" it in the coins themselves.
Rest in Peace

If you collected seriously "back in the day", you most likely learned how to grade coins much faster! There are many pro's and con's to the TPG question, but I miss the simple grading standards and the agree the hobby was much more affordable. Mike

Not necessarily true BB, as most people in those days were collectors and not speculators. You can obtain a coin from a collector (usually) that is as specified, where as a speculator will (usually ) hipe a coin they are trying to get rid of and this is where the problems begin.

As has been said, most of the people who were into collecting (BC = before casing) were able to tell which coins they really wanted and which ones they didn't. You bought the coins in those days and not the plastic (as today). A world of difference.

My collection will one day be noted as a old time collection !!

Im collecting very much as it was done before, my coins are Raw unslabbed and graded by the collector,, Me !!

The TPG's offer a valuable service for authentification, but in my opinion have dumbed down the hobbie to some degree !!

learning to grade used to be mandatory ,, today an entire collection can be built on someone elses opinion of the coins !! and the collector need never learn to grade !!
