I found this circulated 1954-D Jefferson nickel with the lower left side of the D mintmark that's smashed. You can also see some damage to the lower right side of Monticello. How can I tell whether this is mint damage or circulation damage?

Even if this coin was struck yesterday, once it hits circulation there is no way to prove it happened at the mint. Damage is just that, damage, where ever it happened.

MorgansRmine -- Thanks for the quick response. I suspected as much, but thanks for confirming.

Just guessing here, but even if it that kind of damage happened at the mint,it wouldn't matter anyway. Would it ?
Rest in Peace

to the forum. Odds are that's PMD (post mint damage).
