I have seen usb microscopes from DIGITAL PEN CAMERAS(Digipen)‏
to many others which claim are good for coin photography. As a person who doesn't know much about photography, can these work? I need to take closeup pics for pennies. I know there are other methods recommended, but would like to know about USB microscopes. Why or why not.

I have a QX-5 which was marketed as a kids microscope that I think you can get for around 50 bucks on ebay and other places. it does a decent job of closeups but it works allot better with additional lighting than the one thats built in. It may be able to take a whole Lincoln Cent picture but it can not focus on the whole coin of a larger coin, but if you are wanting to concentrate on one specific area it should do an alright job for that. It magnifies from 10X,60X,200X

Hey, what ever works. If it gives you the quality you desire...run with it. I went the other way with a big microscope with a digital camera that connects through a USB port. I probably would have been just as happy with what bryan1315 has. Funny thing about collecting, you can spend as much as you want or don't want.

Just remember, a big scope will run a few hundred bucks; when you can get a setup for less than a hundred, the extra money can go to your favorite coins.

I had the QX5 and I really liked the 10x and 60x but I could never get enough light to use the 200x and I really wish it had something like a 20x or 30x because the jump between 10-60x is pretty significant.

I upgraded my computer to Windows7 and now the QX5 is no longer compatible....I can't get it to work at all.
