I am relatively new to coin collecting and wanted to start a thread on HSN Coin Collector. I am really curious what the expert collectors think about this program. Is just about everything they present a hyped-up rip off or is anything worthwhile? I have been watching really just for information and for entertainment, although Mike's voice can get annoying after awhile!

I'm a relatively new collector myself, and everything I read at the beginning and during my formative days taught me that HSN is an expletive in most collecting circles :)

I doubt if you will find a single experienced collector that would encourage buying from any of the TV coin programs. Their overhead is so high that there is no way they could sell coins anywhere close to the prices you would pay at a typical Brick and Mortar shop, even worse compared to ebay.

Ditto! Be afraid, very afraid! In my humble opinion.

It's fine to watch, as long as you don't buy!

Watch it if you like dark humor, because I really think they are joking.

I have collected coins since I was actually 5. It started when my grandmother would give me a half dollar every sunday. Then I started to collect I would hoard in the odd coins I would find. This included wheat pennies, halves, dollars, and other odd coins. I stopped for a few years then I started up when I found my fathers old collection. He gave that to me and I am finished with old collection. I have even expanded to foreign, bills, and folders. I am now starting an album for type and will soon buy an album for halves. My grandfather always bring in advertisements for coins from newspapers and magazines. I always have to explain to him that this may be a good price on the coin but there are hidden information. I've seen silver Morgans for about 15 each but the catch was shipping and handling. (that added about another 10 and by then the coin wasn't worth it. The only good deal I have found (to date) was a Littleton advertisement where they gave you 2009 P and D uncirculated (all designs) which cost $3 and free shipping and handling. As a bonus they added an updated penny folder (so that it included the new designs. I have been a coin collector for my life and I always listen to tv coin ads and I laugh at everyone of them because it cost more to get the coin than to drive to a local dealer and purchase it.

Look at them, do some research, find out shipping and handling, then add it up and then figure out is your money worth that coin. Most of the times it is not. But rarely you will find a good deal. RARELY.

chance favors the prepared mind, do watch tv commercials, but be open minded. Occasionally peep in to your nearest coin shop for any old coins.
warm wishes.

I watch their coin collecting episodes, for a laugh. Remember the Washington dollars with no edge stamping, they where hawking those coins for some $300. Seems to me like the host of show acts more like a snake oil salesman than anything.

For ENTERTAINMENT, YES. For anything in the way of a purchase, NEVER.

I agree with the others, buying coins from TV (anywhere) is a very bad idea. They only sell them to reach the ignorant and take their money. That said....
I admit I actually DID buy ONE thing from them that I do not regret. I subscribed to the 2009 Lincoln program and felt it was actually a good deal. For each of 4 issues I got MS-67 P and D slabbed cents, two P/D rolls graded (at least MS-65) and a grading certificate (4) for free grading at ANACS of any coin(s) of my choice. They also tossed in a couple boxes to hold it all. As I recall the whole package ended up costing me $240 shipped ($60 per issue).
Now, just because this happened to be a good deal ONE TIME, don't count on it ever happening again.
