While I am at work I watch ebay to see what is going on. I bring up a website and check bids against what a bill "should" be valued. Is it me or do people really overpay by alot on that site. The "buy it now" always seem to be about double what a bill should go for. Comments?

oh yea. bidding wars are killer on ebay. and BIN are almost always over priced.

Usually its for that reason that I will just put the most I'm willing to pay, and forget about it. I've turned off "out bid" and "sorry you didn't win" emails. All I get are question and "you won" emails.

Otherwise I would get caught up in the, "well its only a few more dollars."

Agree 100% with Ian. It's best to keep psychology out of these things -- best to be cold and objective when buying.

Some of the high priced "buy it now" is just to cut down on the number of offers they get to that effect. Ian's method is the only way to buy on ebay, but I've gotta admit when you're a seller, it's great to watch emotions come into play on your auction.

You can get some ok deals with buy it now as long as there is the best offer option is open and the seller is willing to haggle - I always list my own buy nows at least 1/3 above my target price...sometimes you get lucky with a high offer

Many of the coins I've viewed on ebay seem to be priced reasonably at BIN prices. Sure there are some crazy high prices but the Bing Cashback deal pushed some of those prices up and since that ended, the BINs have dropped a touch. At least on what I'm looking at. ebay did sign me up for 2% back via ebay Bucks after the Bing promotion ended so that helps a bit.

EDIT: I didn't notice this was posted in Paper Money Forum.

yes bidding wars suck. but what is even worse is when you lose for a 1.00 more. BIN I wont even consider for the most part.

At times the BIN is cheaper than what auctions end up at and I have bought some items in this manner. For some reason when there is free shipping folks tend to over bid (jmo).

As per the published prices -- Some are way over, others way under and most are about 30% over priced.

Short run "stars and regular blocks" are not well represented in "some" of the books unless you do a lot research and sort this out.

Unlike coins, currencies have serial numbers and are track able.

i hate to leave when there is 30 minutes left because it happens so often that I get beat by 10 cents. and of course, those are extremely below melt/value
