My grandfather gave me this coin to help me start a collection when I was young. Neither of us could ever figure out what it was. There is no legible date or writing on the coin.

This side of the coin has some type of crest with a circular pattern of stars in the its center and something that looks like a dome on top. There are 2 different plants on either side of the crest.

The 40 in this picture is very deeply punched into the coin like a chop mark. It is offset inside some type of wreath.

Sorry about the resolution on the pics. I couldn't manage to upload anything with higher image quality, but I'll keep trying.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's a Brazilian Empire counterstamped 40 reis. According to Krause, the stamps were applied in 1835 to all copper coins. The original "undertype" coin is likely to be either a 40 or 80 reis from the 1820's.

You might be able to read the date and mintmark, on the side with the counterstamp.

(Edited for spelling. Note to self: check spelling, then hit submit! )
