I am trying to identify this token I found. It has the name Jake Davis & Co and Galveston around the edge of the obverse side and Wholesale accents in the middels. On the reverse side it has "This check will be redeemed by any dealer" around the edge and "Good for one Fontella Cigar" in the center.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

The term "Close but no cigar" comes from US gaming machines around the 1950s. Typically the top prize on a 'one arm bandit' at a fairground was a cigar (or a token to redeem one). Hence if you almost win its "close but no cigar".

I would guess Jake Davis is the name of the fair and Galveston its location. Not sure what the "wholsale accents" bit is, maybe the maker of the token.

Thanks BobbyHelmet. I was able to learn that the Jake Davis & Company, Wholesale Grocers was wiped out in the 1900 hurricane in Galveston Texas. I am sure that is where the wholesale accents comes into play. I am still trying to find out if someone knows about this token.

Hi,

I found that same token the other day around a small town in Texas. Have been searching for information when I came across your posts.

The accents is actually Agents as you will see in the pictures.

Please let me know if anybody has any new info to share, age, rare...?

Thank you,

KC

I know this is an old thread, but for future reference I wanted to explain that this type of cigar exonumia is a trade token.

As a way to promote a line of cigars, the cigar manufacturer produced storecard tokens for its "wholesale agents."

These tokens were then distributed to the public to advertise the wholesaler's business and to provide the recipient with a trade check to exchange for a free cigar.

There are a lot of varieties of these "wholesale agent" tokens in both brass and aluminum. You can see by the image below that I kind of like the aluminum ones.
