Here's coin number 1 of 5. Any help on type, age and value would be much appreciated.

All 5 remind me of Papal States coins from approx 1100-1500 but not been able to find any matches.

Probably wrong but thats all I can come up with!

I've been looking too - still no joy though.

Can you make out any of the text on this coin - I cant get more than a couple of characters, maybe if you can get 4 or 5 in a string it could help?

I think all 5 are from the same dates / issuer so if we can crack this one I think the others will be easy.

I'm going to get some much better quality pictures on here today for the rest of them, as still no luck, and will work on trying to get the text right.

As for this one, had a lucky break this morning:

Kings Of Axum, Ouazebas AE18. Circa 350-400 AD. There seem to be 4 - 5 varieties, and sell for between about $100 - $240 a piece, so that's a pleasant surprise.

Quite an interesting background, the first African entity to issue coins, and they are early non-Roman Christian coins. Haven't been able to track the rest of them down yet, but no doubt will probably be close to this one.

Interesting - just had a look on the net and it looks like this coin will have had / maybe still does have the remnants of a gold inlay on it (around the figure in the first pic).

I think I have also found a match for coins #2-4:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armah
Dated a bit later than the first one (600ADish) but in the same area.

As for coin #5 the second one on this page could be a version of it or at least be another nudge in the right direction.

I've looked at a few examples of this coin and the composition of the cross seems to vary a lot so could explain why yours looks a little different.

All seem to be very rare and around the $200 mark if in reasonable condition. Good stuff.

Thats seems to cover them all- I agree #5 does seem to fit the same type as the ethiopian example, hopefully i'll find the exact type. I'm very pleased with the rarity and potential value, much better than I expected!

Thanks again bobbyhelmet - I think you helped me before with my saliqua's a little while back as well.
