This particular class of replica, with what I've dubbed the "Edvard Munch"-style skinny owl with a deformed eye and two planks for wings, has been seen multiple times here on the forum; see also

here, all in the past year or so.
It seems to me to be likely that they were mass-mailed out as part of some kind of advertising campaign. Reader's Digest is notorious for sending out tokens, replicas and other gimmicks to try to get the attention of their customers. I imagine in such circumstances that once the ad is thrown away, the context is lost and after a while nobody can remember where the coin-like thing came from.
