i was curious if this was possible. I was looking at my type set at all the empty gold spaces and thought, 'can I get date gold for melt?'

the type 1, 2, 3 and quarter eagle melt values are around what my budget was. maybe if someone had an EF or lower grade maybe it would go for around melt?

this kinda pertains what I am going to ask. I am trying to learn more about this. if you have a gold proof and you are thinking about selling, I am assuming that they have to give you more then melt price?

I don't know this for a fact but with the price of gold where it is and climbing, bullion value has probably outstripped numismatic value on common and/or lesser grade stuff. The premium above spot for most gold coins these days is 5-7%.Unless you get them here on the forum, I don't think you will get them for much under 5% premium. If you do, let me know where they are. The premiums are keeping me from buying these days.

you can sometimes buy damaged gold coins for melt value, but undamaged ones are much harder to find since their numismatic value is over the bullion value

I was wondering the same thing. I still want to add a $2.50 Indian to my Son's collection (he's only 4 years old and I'm building a nice group for him) but with the current gold price it is just out of the question to pay much more than spot price. I don't want to get a fouled up former jewelry piece, but the way it looks that is about my only option.
