My 12 year old grand daughter wants to buy a coin to put in her coin album, she has been putting pocket change in on her own.( I have one album for all 7 grand-kids)

The coin she wants is - $8 Sterling Silver Maple of Wisdom #107785 - cost $90 from the Canadian Mint.

Will this coin hold it's value or is she better off to buy some other coins 1-2-3 or whatever? If so what would you buy for a 12 year old girl?

PS she wants to buy something for her own album.

I have a 12 yr. old G-daughter myself. In fact, she just came over. Not much of a stretch to get them into critter collecting. Today I have a 7-sided Gambia 1 dalasi with a slim-snout alligator in UNC. Couple bucks. Her album will fill-up too quickly. Birds & flora are abundant, also. Boys really get a kick out of reptiles. And they're cheap!

You are better off letting her buy the coin that she wants. This way she will keep up her interest in collecting coins.

Of course it might cost you dearly when she turns 18. 21 etc.

I just looked it up on ebay. I never knew they made coins with holograms and crystals inserted. It looks like they sell between $95-$130 USD.

WHAT. One Album for 7 grand-kids? I suggest you go out and buy each an Album. Those are YOUR grandkids, not a friend of neighbor.

Why are you worried about spending that on your own family? What do you think a wedding will cost her parents?
Naturally you don't want to spoil them all but that is why God made Grandparents you know. Our job now in life is to make those kids happy.
Anyway you'ld be amazed at just how smart kids are today at 12. They are a lot smarter, more advanced, more educated than we were when we were that age. If she really wants that coin, don't you think she is worth that?

just carl, I think you misunder stood , I have 1 album for each grandchild Canadian and US and also she has stated that she wants to buy this her self to put in her book.

I don't put any coin in an album unless I have 7 coins one for each album.

You two are still relatively new, so I am not surprised that you have not figured out his sense of humour yet.

I think the only thing you need to worry about is helping her make sure she is not getting taken advantage of. Beyond that, I would say you should let her buy what she wants. That sounds like a pretty neat coin. A classic coin that appeals to most "serious" collectors? Maybe not. But if it appeals to her, that's what collecting is all about.

When I take my daughters to coin shows, they humor me and walk through the entire room looking at all the silver and gold. I tell them if they are good, at the end they can spend $5.00. Where do they go? to the box of tokens. They pick out 20 different colored aluminum tokens. Yes, I still cringe everytime they do it, but I act excited when they show them off to me.

One of them gave up on coins and now picks up bottle caps off the street.
Rest in Peace

Good for her! I pick up glass, pop tops, and rusty nails when I'm out coin shooting; at least her finds are prettier - lol.
