I recently aquired this 1794 8 reales. It has the bank of England counterstamp, weighs 24.4 grams and measures 39mm.

There are traces of a silver plating, though the majority of it has worn off. It appears to have seen circulation, though managed to avoid being destroyed. Would this be one of the forgeries made in England to flood the trading markets with low quality 8 reales fakes in late 18th / early 19th centuries?

I find it a very interesting piece if that is the case, and expect it probably has more historic than monetary value. If anyone can confirm my suspicions or has any further info at all, it would be very welcome. Thanks.

Although I am just learning, it looks like a counterfeit to me.

the silver plating is worn off, the counterstamp is not sharp and the weight is down by 3 grams, these three items point somewhere in the forgery area

still, for me its a nice collectible item and the only question that interests me is, when was it really made?

It certanly is a counterfeit, no question of it being 'real'. I am hoping that it may be one of the counterfeits deliberately made in England to undermine faith in the currency - hopefully we can find out! just been looking through the forum now and come across a great article on the 'Birmingham' forgeries by swamperbob - no doubt he will probably have a very good idea hopefully

I would call yours a contemporary counterfeit, made by someone in a strictly non-official position. The die-work of the counterstamp looks too poor to be an "official" issue. The coin you have is cast, not stamped, I believe, by the visible lumps and weaknesses around the rim dots.
