Was curious what a realistic price would be for a GEM 2001 $50 4-digit Richmond Star note would be? I haven't ventured too far into the higher-denomination notes yet, and would appreciate any input from some of the much more experienced collectors out there. Thanks!

This particular low numbered star notes are from BEP sets and I would research this further. As per price it's going to depend a lot on the SN as you know.

FWIW, I am trying to do a trade on one of these notes valuing it around $110 (graded at 65). Not sure if it will work out and am still researching this whole BEP star sets in general as to how much premium they are worth and reconsidering the whole trade.

Don't get me wrong but some of these BEP sets are really "NOT" worthy of huge premiums for a random SN.

iamkayelem, It's a print run of 640K

Hi Ceylon, thanks for the feedback, the serial# on that 2001 $50 FRN is 000028xx (can't recall the exact #'s). Can you tell me a bit more about the BEP sets that you mentioned as I'm not familiar with them? Were they some sort of "collector sets"? Thanks!

Quick search of ebay and I got these hits. There were 4000 of these sets sold. What happens is that a lot of collectors and dealers buy multiples in the hopes of hitting a really good number. Like playing the lottery some win and some loose.

A lot of the collectors in fairness to them hang to what they get and others playing the numbers game will end up dumping it "back" into the market for resale. Some sets do appreciate in value over time. But "my spec" is that this is NOT one of those sets.

I am in no way discouraging in what you want to buy, but do not over pay for it. That's my point. The sn I was looking at was in the 3600 area.

I have always looked at buying anything one way, if you like something enough to want it, then buy it.
I always do my research these days, we all do, it is the computer age and it makes it very easy to shop
around and find our best value.
If your looking at collecting $, or anything that matter, for an investment, hobby, whatever, then do indeed do your research and buy the best you can afford.
Star notes always have value, you can always find someone willing to pay a premium for a star note.
With that said, books never buy anything, they are a guideline only, and only someone with the money,
willing to spend it, will determine whether or not the note is worth the price wanted.
Take those same notes in say 25 years, then you might have a tougher to find note that will demand more.
The nice thing about acquiring the new design notes, you can be picky, find the best notes, look for the
lower serial numbers and harder to find blocks, then put them away and forget about them, at least until
you want to peek at your treasure, and if your like me, that will be often. Enjoy.
