I would be grateful if anyone could provide background on the below coin. I purchased it at a curio shop in Kuwait and while it is in rough shape, I would be interested in hearing if anyone had information on its origin, date, etc.

Thank you.

Whereas I'm no expert ... Sap could claim that title ... the fact that it turned up in Kuwait is suspect to me, and I would opine that it's a Chinese fantasy repro that uses various Middle East design motifs, as it reminds me a bit of a widow's mite, but it has way too many surviving details to convince me that it's old.

But let's wait to see what Sap or another expert says about it. Don't use it to prop up a table leg just yet.

Thank you for your input. There is no doubt - Kuwaiti 'antique' shops are generally full of Chinese repro crap. The only thing that gives me hope is that this was packaged with a real coin - a 1936 Lebanese 1 piastre(with the hole in the middle). I will not get my hopes up, and guess I'll wait and see if there is further info.

The coin is mediaeval Egyptian - Islamic - from the Mamluk period. This example from the reign of sultan Sha'ban II (1363-1377 AD) looks a very close match. Copper coins of this ruler are extremely common; your coin is most likely genuine.

Every time I read one of these threads it makes me want to purchase some ancient coins. But my ignorance will surely lead me to some lovely Chinese repos.
