Hey all! I just purchased a 1929 National Bank Note. It is a "small sized" note, but it is slightly wider than the federal reserve notes and silver certificates I have (about 1/8 inch wider; the printed area is slightly wider too). Is this normal? The paper looks and feels right, but I want to be sure I haven't been had!

I have seen a little variation in note size. I have a 1929 national and I measured it and it is 6 1/8 in. wide x 2 5/8 in. tall with a printed are of 5 7/8 in. wide x 2 7/16 in. tall.

Hope that helps.

Edit: Mine is a ten dollar note btw.

Mine is a $20 - 6 1/4" wide, printed area 6 1/16" wide. Does this sound normal?

I'm certainly no expert on these matters, I suppose the difference in the print area could easily be explained by two different denominations, but I would think the paper size should be the same.

Once again though, printing of notes has produced a lot of odd things. I have found modern notes that the paper size isn't exactly the same so I would have to believe in the 30's that the technology wasn't as advanced and could produce such a difference.

My suggestion would be to take it to a dealer and ask them to look at it for you.

Wouldn't the fact that the sheets were stacked then cut affect the size? The bottom would be slightly different from the top. I think that happens today when they cut fabric, some shirts and pants are bigger or smaller even though they are the same brand. As Nickelman said it was 8- years ago too.

I took it by my coin dealer today (ordered it online) and he says it's legit. Thanks for everyone's advice and checking on this.
