As a newbie I was looking for some tips about roll hunting.
Also I was wondering why banks put old coins in rolls?

The banks just roll up whatever they've got in their deposit boxes. It's like searching through the cash registers of all the local businesses after they've deposited it.

I find roll hunting both rewarding and relaxing. I put a movie in and go through a box sometimes I find some foreign coins (Zimbabwe, EU, Balboas), sometimes I find older coins (1933 Canadian cent, 1906 American), and sometimes I find varieties (pointed 1965, magnetic 2006), but it's always interesting.

I buy two boxes, $25, at my bank (RBC) and take them home, in a week or two I return them to another RBC and go to my original bank and buy two more. My banker has told me the chances of getting the same box back, even after a day or two, is about zero. I live in a town of about 80,000 people.

Everyone is different but I first use a magnet on a roll and look for the 2006 magnetic (no MM) then search the roll and keep all 1985 (check for pointed 5's) and everything before 1970 (there are so many varieties in the 1960s). I replace the coins I keep and re-roll.

My recent find was a clipped 1972 that is my first clipped. I'm still really hoping to find a double stamp on a coin (not just double date).

Cheers
