Im going to a pretty large 2 day show this weekend (pnna.org) in Portland Or and I will be on the look out for some gold pieces for my type set.

I realized I've spent all my research time on grading and wear patterns, and detecting counterfeits and not on pricing.

So I'm wondering if anyone has a short list of Gold coins (by type) that I could expect to pick up for about melt, or ones that their value is solely based on spot, ie Spot +$50, spot + 10%, etc.

I figure ill be looking mostly at half eagles and smaller but would like to know for all anyway.

Thanks in advance.

I opened this thread to see what you were selling!

If you're buying raw, then common-date Coronet Head half eagles in EF or AU should be only slightly over spot. Look to pay around $370 or less for these and ask around, some should be available. There's .242 troy ounces of gold in a half eagle so melt is about $322 today.

Quarter eagles always sell for well above their melt price unless damaged. There's $161 in gold in them but finding a decent one for under $200 might not be possible. If you're willing to go $210-$220 you should be able to find an acceptable, circulated example. Indian Head $2.50 will likely be more though.

As you move to Eagles and Double Eagles, the percent over melt for common dates becomes a bit better for the buyer. I would consider a $10 Liberty Eagle. They contain almost 1/2oz of gold and can be found in raw, circulated condition for around $700. With $665 in gold here, that's a good way to go.

Best of Luck!

Gold dollars only go for melt when damaged, and three dollar gold pieces never go for melt no matter what condition there in
