Hello.

I am hoping someone can identify this for me. I came across this in a garage sale. I have tried to find info on the internet, but couldn't.

Box info:

Red w/yellow collectors box is 3.5" x 3.5" x 1.5".
On back of box it says "Wide Sky Collection".
On UPC, *JNB00173".
On top inside of box and on insert is says "Intercoastal Companionship".
That is the only English, all the rest is in Chinese.

Coin & Case info:

Coin fits snugly inside of an inner plexiglass case that has 4 magnets imbedded into the plexiglass. The magnets hold the top piece to the bottom piece. The plexiglass has a cutout that perfectly matches the scalloped edges of the coin, and the coin fits down inside plexiglass. There is a small gold colored stamp on the top plexiglass piece (Chinese writing)and a flowery design etched into the backside of the plexiglass.

Panda coin (?) is surrounded by brushed gold(?), scalloped edge that does not come off.
Coin Diameter: 1-3/16" (Scalloped edge to scalloped edge).
Thickness: Almost 1/4" (pretty thick, almost like two coins stacked together, with scalloped edge completely covering coin(s).
Weight: 22 grams/7 ounces.
There are no English markings on the coin, and no numbers. It is all in Chinese.

Thanks in advance for your help in identifying this!

Wide Sky Collection is a pretty big company, but to the likes of HSN (Home Shopping Network) in the states. They have coins, but most of them are private medals or momentos.

It seems that what you have is a privately struck piece, not a panda coin, for gift giving or something of a like. Is there a number on the coin? If it does, it's a Panda, but I need clearer pictures for that to make a right call.

Also, if you can take a focused picture of the certificate, I can translate it for you.

First picture of the box has a insignia of the golden moon cake stamp on the lower right hand corner, which lead me to believe that's the name of the producer, every year there is celebration of the Chinese Moon Cake Festival during the Chinese Lunar calendar at August 15.

This leads me to believe its a center decoration piece within a larger box that held the actual edible pieces around it, although this is the first time I seen something like this, the designers/producers for this festival from China have been showing interesting styles to attract customers in order to make sales.

That's my guess! Please enlarge the certificate to confirm what the occasion was for.

I have attached some scans that should help w/clarity.

There are no numbers on the coin, either side, as hopefully you can see.

OK. This describes the what I believe of what it was and the token or medal is "plated" with 99% pure gold, much like the gold plated quarter in HSN. Limited edition of 10,000. The rest is the description and meaning of the coin.

WD1040 has it right that its a metal used for gift, instead of giving someone edible Moon Cake.

And the meaning of the coin is...

"Fragrant flower, round moon" gold plated medallion (plating is 99% gold), diameter 30mm, has "Fragrant flower, round moon" on the obverse, symbolizes the unity between man and lunar (the moon) and a prosperous life. The reverse depicts a round moon, heavenly clouds, casting over a mountain and two cuddly (for a simpler translation) panda bears, with the inscription "Tuan Tuan Yuan Yuan Unity." The two pandas represent peace, unity, fraternity, and carries the benevolent wishes of China. Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan wish all your accomplishments come true and the best of luck.

The golden moon cake has been plated with gold, expertly crafted and highly crafted. Single set moon cakes are limited to 10000 sets. Minted by the Shanghai Coin Company, and distributed by Guang Tian (Sky Wide) Coins.

01877 Shanghai Coin Company

So yeah, it's not gold, and it's a medallion. Even though it's only limited to 10000 sets, a lot of other things are too. Hope you didn't buy it thinking it was gold...
