I come across this penny, as well as another one, which has a silvery color on the outside rim. It is the same on both sides. Is this the way our new coins are going to wear, that is, as the surface wears down, we will be seeing more silver color to our coins? Or is this a coin that I should hang onto? Hopefully, you can make out the silvery color on the rims. Take care

The 1998 penny is made of plated steel as far as I know.

Edit: it's zinc.

I have a 2009 cent with similar aspects to it. It's zinc most likely.

I think that more of the pennies like this will show up. As the coin is passed on and on, or used in vending machines, or just from wear, silver ringed pennies will become more abundant.

I forgot to check it with a magnet. That should tell if it is steel or zinc core.
