I recently purchased a large cent dated 1850 then noticed the date is considerably smaller than any other I compare it to. I have searched the internet and can not find any information about it.
Can anyone tell me anything about this coin?
Thank you!

It's a counterfeit. The question is, Is it a contemporary counterfeit or a modern one (China)? Hopefully it is contemporary because they tend to bring decent money.

Thanks for the info. Maybe good news, maybe not.... how does one tell contemporary from modern?

This coin finally arrived and I am convinced it is a modern fake. The rim shows striations and a sharp edge that convinces me that it has been manufactured only recently. Also in various places there is what looks like excess metal in recessed areas. I am not experienced in fakes but these look to me to be indicators that it is not genuine.

I asked around this past weekend to some long time EACer who know more about late dats than I do and they all agreed that there have been no reports of a contemporary counterfeit 1850 with a small date. The pictures you have posted also tend to convince me this is a modern fake.

For me it's the grainy devices that give it away.

so are you going to keep it or send it back? I vote send it back. Without knowing how much you paid for it, I know you paid too much for a counterfeit

It has been returned! The seller was surprised at my opinion but offered no arguement when I send the same photos posted here. I am now looking for a good book or two on Counterfeit Detection!
