I have decided to start organizing my small coin collection. Mostly cents with some other denominations gathered here and there. My question is...which folders/binders/pages etc...should a novice such as myself invest in? I have both Us and Canadian coins. I have read different things about Whitman and Dansco. All the information is just a bit confusing with so much product available.

I Roll search cents and nickels mostly. Both US and Canadian. Search what I can afford to get at the time. I will be looking through US half dollars starting in December. I have several Canadian Halves and a mix of Canadian dollars and Ikes. Oldest US cents are 1880's and Canadian 1920's. I like to collect errors and have several in my collection. Nothing high dollar but fun and interesting to me.

Just looking for collectors opinions on what would be good to start. It does not matter to me if I keep the coins in 2x2 or not. Just looking for a safe storage option.

Any and all opinions are appreciated.

Thank you,

For the lower-end stuff I use 2x2's and keep them in the vinyl pages made to fit three ring binders. This allows me to organize my collections and show them off without handling the coins. The extras that I decide to keep I place in the plastic tubes. There will be other opinions, but this method works for me. Inexpensive, but still offers protection and the ability to show them off.

I agree with Omahaorange. If you have a mixture of coins. I also try to simplify things by using the nickel size 2x2 for cents, dimes, and nickels. I use the half dollar size for quarters and halfs. Then of course dollar size for dollars. That way I only have 3 sizes to keep up with. If you find yourself with a lot of one type then you may decide to get a Dansco Album for them. If you have anything pricey, you may want to put them in some airtite holders. Most of those will fit in a 2x2 vinyl page. Hope this helps. Good hunting!

Thank you for the replies. I was considering the 2x2 in the clear flip pages for the majority of my collection. I like to look for errors and varieties and figured the clear 2x2 holders would give me the versatility I need to reorganize as I go.

I also want to complete a cent collection as I go. For that I would like to have a cent collection binder/folder. I have seen several different types. From slotted folders that you put the coins into the punched wholes to binders with clear vinyl pages with dated slots to slide your coins into. Any opinions on which is the better way to go? From what I have read...Dansco and Whitman are similar but with some obvious differences. Any suggestions on which Brand to go with?

Thank you.

I actually keep my collection in binders just as I described. I keep similar coins in their own binder. I use Avery "View" binders, and print my own custom covers and spines. You could even color-code them, as the binders are available in different colors. Others can guide you on the differences between Dansco and Whitman.

You can also buy an Album (stay away from folders) and just put in blank pages and label them however you like. I think Dansco and Whitman both sell blank pages (by size or denomination) and transfer sheets full of characters to make your own custom labels.

I remember reading a while back that the older Whitman folders were not good to keep your coins in. Have things changed now and the Whitman product are know made with materials that are safe for extended storage of coins? I may be losing it...just thought I remember reading it somewhere. I really like the look of some of the Dansco product.

So many choices...decisions, decisions.

It is easy to be confused since Whitman makes both albums and folders.

Whitman folders were and still are bad for coins.

Whitman albums are okay for coins.

Thank you for the info. Starting to narrow down my options now. This is a good thing. :)

I might add that ANY "folder" will not be as good as ANY "album" for your coins.
Folders just simply don't protect your coins the way an album does. A folders primary faults are airflow and physical damage potential.
While an album prevents both of those much much better.

IMO, folders are best used for highly circulated coins of low to average quality. For example, I would never put high MS grades, Proof, or Silver Proof coins into "any" folder made by any company. These better quality coins need as much long term protection as I can put them in.
Combine this with temperature control......humidity levels.....environmental concerns (ie. -naturally occurring invisible detrimental gasses-wood varnishes/stains-cleaning products-air fresheners, etc., etc., etc.,) ...(so many airborne chemicles that we don't even think about !)
Toning or tarnishing of coins is soooo hard to get a handle on for some people, depending on where you live and how you live, and what the specific different environmental conditions are exactly.
Some collections will last for 10-20 years in folders or albums with no problems.....yet others may only last a few short years before alarming "issues" start developing.
That's why, where necessary, I just want the best possible protection for my coins when and where it's appropriate.

Though, I don't wanna "knock" the use of folders for coins AT ALL.

Folders "do" have their place, absolutely. I have lots of them !
I have Memorial Cents folders (P&D only), and have made them as nice "Red" as I can, which actually is an "ever-lasting" work!)
I have Jefferson nickel folders....the same way.
I have Sacajewea/Native dollar folders.....the same way.
I have Presidential dollar folders......the same way.
I have a Buffalo nickel folder.....the same way.
I have a few Westward Series Nickel folders...the same way.
I have the Statehood Qtrs. folders....the same way.
Plus some "Junk Silver" folders and probably a few others I didn't mention.
It's just that "premium quality" coins of mine will all go into "ALBUMS", for the long term protection that they deserve and need.

Thank you for all the opinions and info. I greatly appreciate it.

I do have another question. What is the correct definition of a folder and a album? From what I have seen...folders have fitted punch holes for the coins to fit in but are not open on both sides. Like the old Whitmans where you place the coin in the correct slot but can only view the side facing out. Just looking for clarification. Sorry for the novice questions.

Like you said, the Whitman folders only allow you to see one side & offer no protection from air, physical damage, etc. Albums allow you to see both sides & have a sliding plastic cover over each row to protect the coins.

For Lincoln Cents, my favorite album is the Dansco 8100.
