I came across a few coins graded as "Proof Like" (PL designations) on ebay.

Can someone explain this to me as I am some what puzzled by this meaning I thought all these coins went through the same process when they were minted.

IF PL is a possibility how do you tell it apart?

Thanks

It would have Proof-Like surfaces.

Seriously though, like Morgan dollars that have PL surfaces but were struck using the "normal" process, NGC decided to give PL designations to UHR coins that have highly reflective surfaces.

Marketing guys at NGC were working overtime on this one.

I was wondering about that. DO you know if PCGS has any with the PL designations? All the ones I have seen so far have been NGC.

Thanks

I thought that PL was a Canadian invention:
RCM market their mint-sets as PL, instead of mere Unc
(I may have to stand corrected: maybe the sell both, with a premium for PL)

To my knowledge, only NGC is designating UHR as PL.

ive sold one pl uhr and still own another, the proof likeness of the surface can easily be scene on examples graded as such when the coin is in hand. Typically the first few coins struck off of the dies are much sharper than later coins struck, and sometimes the first few struck off a die are so sharp that they resemble proofs. Real proofs are struck at least twice, as these coins were only struck once they are labled prooflike instead.
They do carry a heafty premium over regular uhrs, expecially in ms 70.

What's interesting about this is the mint changed the dies (hopefully proper terminology) ever 250 to 300 coin strikes for this series and recycled / melted a lot of them IF it did not meet standards.

I went to the bank and looked at mine closely. I THINK you have to take it out of the "mint capsule" to see this effect as the capsule itself was specially designed for this coin. Just my 2 cents.
