I am getting my first box of half dollars. Usually I look for silver but I figure that it took me so long to find someone to order them for me I might as well not miss anything good. Besides silver what else should I be looking for? Newbie. Thanks.

Keep your eyes peeled for 87's. They were not released for circulation for that year and we're only in mint sets. You also want to keep an eye out for proofs, I've found 3 of these so far and one of them ain't completely impaired. Anything from 2002 - 2010 was not meant for circulation either, but I find these to be rather common. Best of luck with your first box, I hope you start off with a bang.

Also look for 1970D and 1974D DDO (rare). One of the 1982 (I think P) has a rare no FG initials on reverse variety. I'd also keep some BUs if you find any. It is a sleeper series and many 70s and 80s were heavily used in casinos and thus BU coins are hard to come by, especially the lower mintage 80s. Plus 82 and 83 were not in mint sets, making BU coins from those years especially important.

I am currently going through some halves. I believe I can tell a 2001 and 2005 proof cause they are really shiny and have good hare, but when it comes to 1972 I can't tell a proof from a shiny coin. Some of them are shiny but they have reall smooth hair. Can someone explain the difference or post some pics for me? I would hate to go through these and miss something good. I am 4 rolls in and found 1 silver, 6 proofs, and one gold one with extra dates on it. Doing ok. Thanks.

Well, first...... a Proof coin will have been made in San Fransisco and will be denoting an "S" mintmark. Versus the more common "P" marks or "D" marks from Philly & Denver.
But, usually, that Proof coin will "GLOW" in the pile or the roll ! You'll see it easy enough the first time, and you'll see why it's easy to tell the difference between Proof and business strike coins.
But you do need to always look at mintmarks, because some are SO impaired through circulation that they might be hard to spot. Same with the 40% silver....."sometimes" it isn't easy to spot and glowing white like usual.......you just should always look at each and every half before pitching it to the garbage pile.

The proofs only have the S mintmark? I have alot of 2005 tha tlook like proofs but they have D and P mintmarks. Are they not proofs? Are they worth keeping, they are really nice. I have some other very nice coins but not with the S. I did find 1 90% and 3 40%.

2005 proofs would have a S mint mark. The coins you have are regular clads, probably near BU. I keep a bagful of NIFC(not intended for circulation) halves, just because I can.

ok, then I did NOT find and proofs, but I found 25 NIFC coins. I also found the weird gold one, 1 walking liberty, 2 90%, and 12 40%. Not a bad day for the first box. I am getting another one tomorrow. Definately worthwhile. Thanks for the help.

Monkeyman -
I searched 3 boxes of halves a week from December 09 through April of this year and the best box I had was 1 90% and 5 40%. I would have been thrilled with what you pulled out of that box!

I was very happy. I ordered a box that I am picking up today and we will see how that goes. My wife hassles me cause I go through coins and paper all the time but she was happy to see the silver. There is another guy on here who found about $1500 in silver in a box. Now that is awesome.
