hi everyone! I'd like your help for this Halloween, I'm giving out wheat pennies for (as well as candy) the treats but I want to make a story/info thingy that people enclose with their gifts. I don't want to make it too boring and I want it to inspire kids to start collecting coins. i was hoping I could start here to make the story/info thingy, I know I have the whole Internet to search but I want to be somewhere where I know I have facts. anyone who helps will get......nothing just the feeling that you may have gotten another YN on the streets buying coins instead of crack. thanks! ~Adam

I have to say I wish I came across someone who handed out coins as a kid. Sure beats being handed a toothbrush!
Sadly I'm not feeling very creative/imaginative due to running on 4 hour sleep, best of luck in your endeavor though!

Crack? Really? Oh, you must mean die cracks! Whatever story you come up with, make sure you tell them each one is unsearched! I hope you get some creative answers to choose from. As a plan B, you could pass them out with a little flyer showing the reverse design changes over the years. from wheat to shield. Or add a little blurb about varieties that can be found in pocket change. Maybe then it will trigger with them that "they don't make 'em like this anymore" and get their interest. Just a thought.

Kids love foreign coins. Any coins with animals on them would be great. I just sent about 30 or so Australian 20 cent coins with the platypus on them to San Diego, to be given to fourth graders. The loved them! In retrospect, a short description of about 20 words with each coin would have garnered extra appreciation.

I hate to be negative but honestly being a YN like myself.. if I got a wheat and I wasn't interested in coins i'd freak. i'd probably egg your house. Now being a coin collector I would gladly take it over candy. I don't know if it will work or not but best wishes! let us know how it turns out!

Good point. Definitely give some candy with the coin as you stated originally. Maybe you can give out those chocolate candy coins? On second thought, maybe not. I would hate to see some kid try to each the "chocolate" Wheat cent!

I think some information of what they have is all you need. Minted from 1909 and 1958, this one was made when your great grampa was 12 years old. Something like that. Some young kids are interested in stuff like that and could create a family discussion.

I got more than a few coins TOT'ing as a kid and I was quite happy to get them. That said, I agree, give candy with the Wheaties. My dentist used to hand out Dimes. Makes sense that he wasn't handing out sugary treats, right? Thing was, that's what I'd buy with his Dimes...

How about? "The penny you hold in your hand could have been used by Babe Ruth, or Lou Gehrig. Maybe this penny helped a family pay for a loaf of bread during the Great Depression. There is history to discover and coin collecting is a fun way to learn. Enjoy your Lincoln Cent!"
