Hey everyone, I am new to the forum and am seeking some informaiton about a 2004a $20 error note. The only thing about the bill that is missing is the green seal over the word "twenty" on the front right hand side of the bill that says "the department of the treasury". The bill doesn't appear to be tampered with and has everything else properly printed. Just curious about any info and a possible value if any?

Wouldn't say for sure if it's genuine without a picture. Some people actually create fake errors by dissolving that part (the green ink is easier than the black) and passing it on as an error.
So if you can, take a picture of it or scan it in.

I'm hesitant to say this as well, but from the pictures it seems there has been no tampering, although the full-colored serial numbers still give me a few questions...

Sort of doubt it here. Questions - how did you come about it? Meaning do you have the before and after note or just found in circulation. Also what does the reverse look like? Anything out of the ordinary in the back? I too am technically challenged for pics at times but you are going to have to get some better pics or scans of this note. Further, I do not see any of this type of error for 2004A. Series 2004 had some similar errors but different in nature. All this being said someone is going to have to authenticate it in person. Contact Fred Bart at Executive currency, and or Stephen Sullivan at capital currency for their input. They are both currency error experts and may be aware of this situation for the 2004A 20's. You could also google and contact "currency error dealers" OR buy a book by the 2 names I mentioned and read up. As per price -- This is wild card on this note, since I do not see any 2004A around it could carry a higher premium. IF you are trying to sell it then educate your self more on this note else you may end up selling it rather cheaply. Good luck |

I just shot an email off to Fred Bart like you suggested, so we will see what he has to say. I came across the bill at work, at a grocery store, and right away I could tell something was not right about it. I checked for all the watermarks and decided I would take the chance and change it out with one of my own $20's.
The back has no sign of anything, it looks, feels and smells perfectly normal like the rest of the bill.

I received one of these in March from my bank. Look in Heritage archives. The same week the bank found it for me and called me I looked in the weekly Heritage auctions and found 3 for sale in PMG holders. They brought $94 each so I figured they are worth $94 minus the PMG submission price. It is a real error.

Pyrbob, that was a good deal. Strange that I did not see any 2004A $20's with that error on ebay or at dealer web sites on my searches. Based on the price realized there might be quite a few out there. Thanks for the heads up. Edited by Ceylon62

$94 sounds about right. My local coin shop has a pair of these, asking $100 per note.
