translation of an article from https://www.hatsanat.org:

Although his given name is Musa Azmi, he is mostly known by his alias "Hamit".
He was born in 1893 in Diyarbakir. His grandfather was also a calligrapher.

His great affection to calligraphy makes him ignore his lessons and his father opposes him being so occupied with that. At the age of 13, he made tughra (Ottoman Sultans' seal) and some writings for the accession of Abdulhamid 2nd.
These are well appreciated and the Sultan rewards him with 1 golden lira.

In 1906, he comes to Istanbul and studies law for one year before he starts Fine Arts Faculty. Starts to run his own shop using the name Hamit.

He passed away in May 1982.
