There are some very smart people on here when it comes to 1859's but unless you can provide a clear, close-up picture of the date they likely can't help you the way you want.

Very true tamarin, the coin could be a lot more if the 9 is doubled punched

I'd love to help you with your inquiry, but I can't see anything from essentially arm's length. A nice blow-up or magnification of especially the date would help, but a full-size photo of both sides of the coin taken from directly above the coin would help to ID secondary markers.

Hi Everyone,

I finally have some closeups and hope they are OK. I just bought a handheld digital microscope. It's great for closeups, but I can't seem to get a big enough field of view for a picture of the entire coin. I've only had it a day so hopefully I'll get better.

You will have to practice with the new "toy", and later you will find that if you can support the camera on something solid, and stable, the photos will be much better. The lighting is bad, anthe images are blurry.
NOW, don't be discouraged! It takes time, to get used to the camera, and you will get some very good advice from the members of this,,and other forums, as you go along.

Thank you for your replies. I appreciate the identification of the variety narrow 9 and the advice about using the hand held digital microscope. I just ordered a stand and will give it a try.

I apologize for answering your question with another question. How can I determine if it is bronze or brass? Good news - I have improved my skills with the digital microscope and can provide pictures of whatever you need to see in detail.
