i have a 1960 Washington quarter, COMPLETELY blast white, only 2 noticeable nicks on the reverse, about half he size of this comma, NOTHING on the obverse, easily MS-67-68, but the question is, will it grade that high?

the values go from MS-65-$20, MS-66-$90, and MS-67-$425.

if I send it in will the graders not want to put it at MS-67 because it has such high value?

will they raise their standards?

thanks,
~Adam

And heres the main reason I dont put stock into TPGs, because this statement is soooooooooo true.

Sadly though, even if its a clear 66, none would buy a raw one at 66 price unless they were extremely confident in their grading abilities. Id say send it in anyway, perhaps with a letter of explanation why you feel this coin should grade 67. Won't hurt. It will probably come back a 66 though.

Ill keep my fingers crossed for 67 :D

In my opinion, a 1960 quarter even in great shape is not worth the cost of TPG slabbing. I think it would be very difficult to get the premium back in the final sale. If it were a smaller mintage and older date it might be worth the venture.

On this topic, why is it that nearly every recent coin gets MS-69/MS-70 while non-proof coins from 1960, even if absolutely perfect, tend to max out at MS-66?

MS67/68 is never easy for a business strike, that is why those grades tend to be worth quite a bit. I can guarantee that you do not have a 68 because PCGS and NGC have never graded a 68. Only 76 total have been graded MS67 and several of those are almost certainly resubmissions, chances are very high that your coin is not a 67 either.

Not sure what recent coins you are referring to but business strikes never grade anywhere near 69/70, they tend to be sub MS-65. Modern collector coins are minted to very high standards and receive special handling. Because of the special treatment the receive, they tend to also grade very high.

I agree with biokemist, and if I were you Adam I'd post pics of the coin since there's the chance you might be thinking a little too highly of the grade and the values you posted seem a little optimistic.

What's your justification for that? Graders may hold a slight bias to any given coin but I've seen tons of coins with similar values to Adam's that are above 66, and there is no obvious advantage or reason for TPG's to be overly biased to higher grade coins.

Because the recent coins that are grading that high are NOT regular business strikes. They are coins that are coming out of mint sets where the coins have been struck from new dies, struck at lower speeds, an at higher pressures. Then the coins are much more carefully handled an not just dumped into bags and run through counters. As mentioned earlier, true business strikes are very rare above MS-66

And that is no matter what the date on the coin is, early or modern and that is why the price difference is so high after 64 on early and 66 on moderns.
Adam, chances of it upgrading is pretty slim (especially if your coin is a 65) to 66 or 67, even if all you can see ate those few marks. When you get that high it has to do with strike also even though it shouldn't but I have seen that it definitely does. If you feel its worth a try you can try it but don't be disappointed if it doesn't come in as upgraded, but if it does post it so we can all celebrate with you
