I have had the good fortune to witness and follow the
discovery of two new Eisenhower dollar Varieties
in the last few weeks. And the better fortune
of finding the Second Known Specimens of both varieties in the same day.
First is the 1972 S 40% Silver Eisenhower with Die Trails
Discovered by Brian Vaile of the Ike Group.
And the second is the discovery of the 1974 S Proof Cuni-Clad
Eisenhower with a Micro "S" of which there is a twin
the 1974 S Proof Silver Micro "S" being a 1 die coin variety
with an estimated mintage of only 10,000
It was found the both coins were struck with the same die.
The Cuni-Clad Micro "S" was discovered also by Brian Vaile and confirmed by John A. Wexler.
Below are the pictures of the second known specimens of both varieties
found by myself in the same day. while looking through my safe
for the Cuni-Clad Micro "S" I came across the 1972 S with Die Trails
That was definitely a day to remember. I just wanted to share with
the group at large to let everyone know new Ike varieties are being
discovered all the time by regular collectors.

seems like October was a heck of a discovery month all throughout US coinage. This month these two were discovered and there was a error 8TF Morgan dollar found in the smithsonian and then the Morgan I discovered where not another of the type had been found in 45 years, I am sure there are others I can't think of right now. I bet we see allot of months go by before we see this many major discoveries in one month as we have seen in October 2010 again

Thanks Guy's

It's a blast being there at the beginning of the
taking off of the serious research of a series of coins
and being part of it.
I used to seriously be into hunting Morgan and Peace dollar VAMS
before the Ike thing took hold.
NOTHING like being there at the beginning!
I wish I would have been there for the start of the search for the
Morgan and Peace VAMS
The purpose of posting these was to let people know that they
are out there for regular collectors with average coin budgets
to enjoy. I don't know how long that will be, back in the day
Morgan's were not widely collected at all Kind of like the Ike's
are today.

yeah I am no Michael S. Fey or Jeff Oxman either in the VAMworld, heck I bet before last week no one even knew who I was so its very exciting being part of something so big that can change the hobby forever. This was my first discovery also so I definitely know how exciting it can be

Bryan,
I read the thread about your VAM discovery
Huge Congratulations
that is really difficult
considering how well studied the Morgan series is

like I said it seems this October was huge for Discoveries all around the board. Think of how many people had seen that 1878-8Tf in the Smithsonian throughout the years and it finally being seen as what it was and then these two discoveries of the Ike series, just a very busy month for discoveries

Bryan,
October has been a very busy month indeed. it is amazing to me
that there are discoveries like this being made.
Never a dull moment. I love it.

John 1,
Mine were just lucky finds in the safe after learning
about Both Discoveries being made by Brian Vaile of the
Ike Group.
Thank You Though.
As far as a value on this variety I have not a clue at
this point, They are so new that none have made it to an auction
or put up for sale to establish a price zone for it.
I personally try very hard to stay away from the price sheets
and values of different coins, Not that I don't have an idea what
different coins are worth. It is just not my focus. I leave the
establishing of value to my son or future grand kids.
I tend focus more closely on the rarity scale of a given coin
and the 72 S with die trails is up to a population of 6 at this time.
Brian Vaile's Discovery specimen, My second find specimen.
and one other member of the Ike Group found 4 in one batch
the other day.

Very interesting month indeed. I am beginning to rethink my reluctance to become a variety collector, especially since my favourite series (the Eisenhower dollar) has more than a handful of them now.

Jbuck,
Me thinks that you would not regret the decision
to start collecting the Varieties
It reminds me of treasure hunting right at my desk.
