I sincerely hope that coin is authentic, but given the rarity of chain cents, I would be extremely cautious. Is it in a TPG holder with a grade, or is it loose?

I hope for you its authentic, those Chain cents are pretty rare and very sought after. If anyone else was there and knows anything about coins I am guessing it cost you (no pun intended) a pretty penny. We would need better pictures to help you with a grade or to even begin to tell you an opinion on authenticity. I have to tell you the eye scares me a little but would still need bigger pictures to tell you anything else

That's a pretty cool looking coin. They are called chain cents? I need to do some more searching on these.

yes they are chain cents, they are the first One Cent coin the US ever minted and only a short time in 1793. there were only 36,103 chain cents made in 1793 and there were 63,353 wreath cents minted in 1793 so the chain cent is very valuable and very rare and highly counterfeited because of this

correct me if I'm wrong but,
The chain reverse has 13 links that were supposed to represent the linking or binding together of the 13 colonies to over take the british. However, many people saw the chain as the opposite, that it represented binding and oppression, so the Mint quickly changed the reverse to the wreath.
Kind of a cool story.

That looks interesting. Real or not, it still looks very old and would be worth getting checked out. Nice find!

Larger, more detailed pics are needed. It looks good from the pictures but still need more detailed pictures to confirm authenticity. Many of these are counterfeited but, a good many survive in FR2-AG3 grades. Unfortunately, they also have corrosion issues or damage associated with them. Yours would seem to fit in this category if authentic.

Can't tell from those images but it certainly looks suspect. Here's a genuine example for reference:

That would be an incredible find if it's authentic! Very well done. Is it in a slab?

208 grains (13.48 grams). Observed range, 200-221 grains (12.96-14.32 grams).

I downloaded his picture of the reverse and blew it up and it sure looks like it has 15 links Quote: The chain reverse has 13 links that were supposed to represent the linking or binding together of the 13 colonies to over take the british. However, many people saw the chain as the opposite, that it represented binding and oppression, so the Mint quickly changed the reverse to the wreath. From wikipedia: Quote: The reverse's central design figure, for which the coin is named, is an interlocking chain with 15 links, representing the 15 American states in existence at that time So its 15 not 13. I still think this coin is questionable The neck is way to short, so I do not think this one is authentic

Quote: I still think this coin is questionable It is probably a copy per Bryan's comments; and also the location of "LIB" in LIBERTY on the obverse is far different than the genuine example.
