I have four German East Africa 1916 5 Heller coins but do not know if they are the "Oval" or "Horizontal" type. Can anyone tell me by my attached photo?

My guess is that it is flat, or what you call "horizontal", base, an oval base would be more pronounced. Interestingly enough I cannot find any image of oval base on the web. Is it that scarce?

There's another way to figure out the variety - they should have different thickness. If your coins are indeed flat base, their thickness should be 1 mm or slightly less. If it's oval base, it should be 3/2 to 2 mm thick. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input, svslav.
I have not seen a price guide that shows any value difference between the two types. From that one could conclude that there are as many of one type as the other.
I had seen in the Krause book the info that they are different thicknesses. That didn't get me anywhere because there isn't any real consistency in their thickness. They live up (down?) to their status as "Emergency Coinage"! Your reply did give me an idea though. I think I will weigh them and see what that shows.
