I was over my pop's house today and he decided to pull out all his gold coins and show me. He is in the stone ages when it comes to prices (he bought these coins when gold was at about $500-$600 oz I'd assume. He told me that he only paid about $100 for the coin when he got it. I guess someone was in a hard spot and had to sell some. So he had the money and paid for them. When I go back for better pictures I'll get them. The one's I took were total crap.

My question is, are these coins of any value of the spot price of gold? I know absolutely nothing about them. I can tell you that this coin is proof like. I did a quick search and they didn't make proofs of this year (1881-P) so I'd have to put this coin at at least an MS state coin. I'm no pro at grading of course so I could be wrong.

I was just hoping to get him a rough estimate of value since it was in such gorgeous condition. I'm going to bed so I'll check back in the morning.

Thanks.

I've decided to post my cruddy pictures (taken with an Android phone). So please note that the spotting that you see in the picture does not show up on the coin (even under the 5x loop we had). It's just my shotty camera.

In MS-60, worth just over $500... http://numismedia.com/fmv/prices/5g...ricesp.shtml

Can't really tell the grade from those pics though. Looks like he made a good buy!

There were proof Half Eagles struck in 1881 with a grand total of 42 pieces minted! You might want to re-check your source. 1881 is a common date for business strike Half Eagles however and that's likely what this is - a nice business strike.

Value? Well on the gold content alone these trade around $400 today. In Mint State grades the prices rise very rapidly. In MS63 it's a $1000 coin. Post some better pics. It looks like it could be one worth grading.

As bherring1964 said, these are in the $400 area for a nice circulated example. Impossible to tell exactly from your pictures, but yours appears to be lightly circulated. Still, a very attractive piece!

Alright, so I'm at work for 12 hours today. I'm going to call him and see if he can get some real nice photo's of this coin. I think it's a beautiful coin. But I'm not in a place to be buying gold coins at the moment - so I haven't done any research on them.

I'll see if I can get him to take some pictures of his other gold coins too. I know he's got a gold panda or something like that also.

The coin you posted with this message appears to have great luster, good strike and original toning. If you can come up with some better pictures I'm sure you will get an overwhelming response to your father's coins. The one featured would go for well over the spot price!

I wish I could really get some, but my camera has died. I don't know how camera's work, but this one has been slowly widdling away until about Tuesday when it passed. I promise to get some good one's as soon as I can!

common dated gold coins like this even though old do not usually bring a big premium over spot unless they are in super high grades. Gold is hard to grade for some because its so beautiful but I do believe this one was circulated at one time so it would be in the AU range so the sell price wouldn't be much over spot at the time of sale. It is still a beautiful coin and I wear a $5.00 gold piece in a bezel around my neck on a gold rope chain that I paid $80.00 for when I bought it. I had purchased another one for my ex-wife like mine with a black onyx back ground around the coin that I have also that I paid about the same thing for. I would rather have these common dated classic designs over the modern stuff the mint is cranking out for about the same price just because when you hold it you are holding a piece of history instead of something just fresh out of the mint
