Hi everybody! I was going through some of my Large Cents and looking for errors/varieties when I came across this 1851 date. I was looking in my CherryPickers' Guide and it appears to have the same attributions as the description for Newcomb-44, FS-LC-1851-302 (006.5). Just wondering if my hunch is right. Would love to hear from the experts on this one.

Description: Date punched heavily into die with both 1s repunched several times. A horizontal dash below the base of 1st 1; two more dashes to the right of the upright. etc...

Thank you for any information on this one and thanks for looking.

Well there is no N-44 for 1851, it ends at N-(42). There is a C-44 which equates to N-(37). N-(37) does not match your coin. The pictures are not the greatest but what I see so far seems to be either N-3 or N-4 but it doesn't seem to match either one exactly.

Why does the 2009 5th Edition of the CherryPickers' Guide list a Newcomb 44 number? It also has a Fivaz-Stanton (FS) attribution number of FS-LC-1851-302 with old catalogue number of (006.5). I'm confused due to all the details listed in the book for that attribution number accurately describe my coin.

I was initially going to add 3 more pictures to this post. Is there a way this can be done in this forum site?

Thank you for your reply which brings up some interesting questions. I am going to see what I can find on this.

Thanks again-

Brian

Looks like I was wrong about the N-(44). Apparently there must have been a couple of recent discoveries. My second edition of the Grellman book only goes to N-(42) but Penny prices does list a 43 and a 44. If you do have a N-(44) you have a very nice coin. According to Penny Prices there are only five pieces known, two 40's, a 7, a 5, and a 2 coin.

I guess I need to pick up a third edition of Grellman.

Man, I thought for awhile that it may have been debunked or something. Scared me for a minute. I will post more pictures to this post if it will let me. Otherwise, I will possibly start a new/not so new thread in continuation.

Thanks again-

Brian

don't complain, the moderators put a lot of work into this forum, they don't allow cross posting, you ARE able to post pics in replies.

the reason why you cant email is because you don't have enough posts to.

calm down and read the rules again

Earlier today, I attempted to post more pictures to this thread to fully illustrate the possible variety I have described in this post. Through numberous attempts, I could not upload more than one picture. So I decided to post a NEW link with reference to this orininal post so I could display a few more pictures. Someone within the staff asked me why didn't I just post this within my original post without reading my explanation. He advised me to do so and BLOCKED MY 2ND POST! When I tried to contact him through email to explain, the site said I was not allowed. I, therefore am posting my answer here in hoping to enlighten the hasty blocker. Is this how new members are treated on this site?! GOOD GRIEF!

The other topic was locked so that there would not be discussions on the same coin in 2 different topics. It only confuses everyone and serves no good purpose.

Every time you upload a photo there is a very clear option in the window to upload another....

Please allow me the opportunity to apologize if I offended you. I didn't mean anything offensive. I was remarking more on AdamE's (a long-time regular here) approach. I found it funny.

I can see, however, the approach may have lacked the appropriate tact for a new member's welcome. For that I apologize.

You are very welcome here and please don't let this interaction taint your future connection with this Forum.
