OK, I will ask this stupid question and show how little I know,(I did a few searches for this and found nothing). Going through my old coins, collected as a kid. Came across a Eisenhower dollar that was not grey/dull like the rest. It does not look like a proof, just very shiny and it has an all bronze or more like gold edge to it. So what is it?

What's the mint mark? I would bet it's clad... Not silver. I can't tell you without more info.

OK, no mint mark that I can see,(just the "FG" on the neck line). The finish on this coin is not very fine, much like the other Eisenhower dollars I have, just very shiny. I will see if I can get some pictures posted. Did I forget to mention that it is dated 1972? Thanks again, paul.

Sounds like you have a BU 72 from Philly.

it looks like someone dipped the edges into a gold color solution. I have found a total of three Gold Platted ikes. It has some heavy marks on it but it is a lot better than what other ikes I've seen. no mint is Philly. D is Denver. S is San Fransisco.

Again Gentlemen......Many Thanks! So for my last question on this matter...... What do I do with it? Lets say you don't really collect Ike dollars but came across this nice BU 1972, What would YOU do? Have it sent off to be graded and cased, seal it in some protective cover, or just put it back in the coin jar?

I would spend it.....but then again I dont collect Ikes...i think that is probably the ugliest coin the mint has ever made. well that and the Susan B Anthony dollar is even uglier. just my opinion of course.

that may BU but it has scratches on it. I would just spend it or just throw it in a box for your kids or something. I keep a bunch of these and I am in college and when I go out to eat I tip with either 2 dollar bills or Ike dollars. The waitresses usually appreciate the ikes cause most of the time they grew up with them and dont see them alot.

Lincolncentguy, Why are these the ugliest? Is it because they both have the same reverse..... or that Susan and Ike look so much alike?
Coincollector123, Good Idea!! I never thought of using dollars and halves for tips!

I can't tell from your pictures, is it a type 1 or a type 3? I have the feeling that this coin wouldn't grade. It looks like the reverse has been cleaned (lots of hairlines) and perhaps the obverse too.

odentheviking,
It is a 1972 Philadelphia Type 1 Ike. Before relegating the coin to a junk pile or putting it back into circulation. It might be a good idea to check it for Doubling or a number of other varieties that come on the 72 Type one. Such as the various die clashes TALON HEAD HAIR LIP JAW LINE MOON LINE UPSIDE DOWN U THE VOLUNTEER EYE CLASHED IKE As far as 72 Type 1's go yours does not look like she is in too bad of shape from the photos. I have seen MUCH worse
