Isn't a copy of a coin that does not have any sign that it is a copy considered a counterfeit coin?

My neighbor bought 3 copies on ebay and I was surprised that they were not stamped copy. They are being used to fill spaces in his collection. I thought it was the law that they had to be stamped replica or copy apparently not.
Rest in Peace

It is the law. Hobby Protection Act.

Just because something happens a lot, doesn't mean it's legal. In this case, it simply means that the fake coin smugglers are better at doing their job than US Customs and ebay are at doing theirs.

Since this thread doesn't seem to be about US commemorative coins, I'm moving it to the Main Coin Forum.

I saw that all those old roman coins were fakes and sold on ebay never stamped copy or anything

Like 2-3 years ago ? from canada ? guy made $75,000 selling those fakes as " unearthed roman coins "

Claimed he new nothing about them coins just selling them . They came from china

Here is the catch he was cuaght deceving the people by calling them roman coins, and was busted for that
had he simply said these coins " are unearthed coins that appear to be from the roman time period " then disclosed He has no knowledge of the minting date, or when they were made, who made them he would have been just selling coins,

But instead he decieved buyer by claiming they were from certian time periods and named the coins roman coins

As mentioned it is against the law not to mark them if they are made here. But the coins your friend bought were made in China where US laws do not apply, so it is perfectly legal for them, under Chinese law, to make unmarked copies of US coins. It is also legal under Chinese law for them to sell them, and to ship them out of the country. It is illegal for you friend to have imported them into this country. So in the eyes of the law, the only person that has done anything illegal is your friend.

I always wonder just how many people have counterfeited coins in their collections and have no idea. There are so many counterfeited coins and in slabs that are fakes took, I could easily see many buying them and putting them in their Albums and never knowing they are fakes. I knew a dealer that was in the buisness for about 60 years that bought a counterfeited coin and didn't know it until he sent it to a TPGS. Think about that when you look at your so called most valuable coins. It's scarry.
