On Saturday I am renting a Garrett GTi 2500 for the weekend.
I am happy with my ace but the nagging feeling about wanting to upgrade will never go away until I have at least tried a supposed top of the line machine.

Will report my findings here
Rest in Peace

I don't know how far from the coast you are, but have you considered the Cobra hybrid beach magnet metal detector? This thing is submersible. Retail on it is $1000 though, but Kellyco has it on sale right now.

I'm close to the coast but there are hundreds of people searching the beaches in my area. I do better staying with the schools and parks.

My dad bought me the Garrett GTi 2000 a few years back. I never got the chance to get fully acquainted with it and since I got sick and will likely have my hand amputated I will never get the chance. From what I have read, the difference between the 2000 and the 2500 are better electronics and a back light for the display.

Rich, have you tried out detecting at Bolivar? I have gone since Ike but there was just to much debris and I wasn't 100% on how to work the discriminating modes on the 2000.

I've tried all along the coast from LA to MX but no matter how early I get there there are always foot prints and holes.. I can watch the guys in Galveston on the beach web cams... The best luck I have had on the beach was at Surfside even then it was only a few cents and a spoon.

Well I played with the GTi 2500 for a week end.
I did all sorts of comparison tests between it and my Ace.
Yes the GTi will tell you the size and depth of the target. but this is no real advantage as I tend to dig all targets.

My wife seeded an area with 17 object ranging from a gold earing to foil
Both the ace and the GTi found all targets the ace was a little faster as I am better at pinpointing with it than I am with the GTi.

Conclusion the GTi is a nice machine a little heavier than my ace but not so much as I would notice. It is accurate in depth and size but I don't think this alone would warrant the additional $600 over the price of an ace.

I think I might look at the AT pro but to be honest my ace does everything I need. so it would have to be a significant improvement to warrant a purchase.
