I just picked up a 2002P uncirculated set and am wondering about the finish on them. Are they the same finish as circulation issue coinage? They appear to be almost PL, but not quite. Are the coins issued in these sets treated a little differently by the mint? (ie: quick polish of the planchets pre-strike or something?), or are they just picked before they go through the big tumble dry?

Strikes and finishes are important to me. I want my collection to be all business strike/finish... whether they come from sets (like pre-2005 US mint sets) or otherwise... but I don't want to put these coins in with other circulation issues coins, unless they are of the same strike and finish.

Sorry for my ramble. Any help is appreciated.

I'm not sure I understand this. Are you saying that 100,467 collector sets were issued in the same finish and strike as circulation coinage?

Hello canadanz

Incirculated Sets

Parts of each denomination, when presented in these sets, mean they have never circulated. The composition of the metal is the same as for circulation coins.

They are hit by wedges of new work, who have been selected to finish in the best possible quality.

These uncirculated coins, were subsequently selected for the best samples of each denomination. Either a surface or nearly perfect and brilliant. They are then packed in a clear plastic envelope branded Pliofilm.

The pieces in these sets are classified as "No more brilliant" or (PL Prooflike)

These pieces are legal tender coins unlike proof coins produced for circulation did not not legal tender.
