Hi Sheepy and welcome to the forum! Lotsa friendly folk here and plenty of soft shoulders since we've all been burned before. Hopefully, you didn't pay a whole lot for the Barber. I'm still smarting over a 79CC Morgan I bought last year for what appeared to be a reasonable price based on the image which now, in retrospect appears to have been Photoshopped just a wee bit. I now use it as an experimental coin (weight, acetone and other forbidden cleaning techniques ) and teaching coin. Some days I win some, some days I lose some, and some days I get really, really rooked. Fred

MC, it's conceivable that it may come out in court that Bob Johnson aka "centsles" quit doing business with ACG so that he could form his own overgrading company NNC. If I were him and it was time to go to court, I'd be hunkered down in some bunker way deep in Amazon country hoping for an anaconda to swallow me. BTW, here's the basic ACG URL http://www.asa-accugrade.com/ , click on "lawsuit..." to get to the .php page. ACG when it filed its third amended lawsuit has reinterpreted its role in the history of slabbed coins claiming to be the first on the scene. I think ANACS might have a counter opinion on that. In law, when a person has been caught in one lie, everything else the person has said also becomes suspect.

I was looking on ebay and noticed several nice looking MS-70 coins slabbed by SGS. I am new to coins but not new to ebay or what goes on there with some sellers so I have aquired a healthy "prove it to me" attitude about what is for sell. I had never heard of SGS one way or the other but I new it wasnt PCGS so I wanted to know who they were. But what really got me suspicious was the MS-70 grade! I recently bought Scott Travers book "Survival Guide" and remembered reading about grades. He said that the instant the coin is pressed on the die it is MS-70, then the second it drops off the die into the bag of other newly minted coins it almost certainly degrades to MS-69 and will begin a further degradation from there. In other words MS-70 is normally unlikely and certainly rare. So when, lo and behold, there they were, 6 beautiful MS-70s all pretty in their SGS slabs I was very skeptical. So, there it is, a $14.95 book paid for itself in less than 3 days. tex

Of course, the one page I didn't check since I'm not a member. ) I wonder if the beheading will be public or merely a private ceremony. (FWIW, I'd like to think Charlie just overlooked this page when updating his website. The directive from ANA was pretty clear on the point that he had to use his ANA number and full name or remove the ANA logo from the site. Also, his reference to his ANA affiliation links to a GoDaddy page, so he may have botched the html I've been known to miss a page or two when doing a site-wide change with my own site.

I've recently bought coins on ebay from some of these "suspect" grading services. I went into the sales with a very healthy dose of skepticism, so I didn't really get burned. I bought pretty common coins in what I KNEW were over graded slabs, but I bought them thinking I would be getting coins that graded quite a bit lower than the slab said. I also bid accordingly. I bought a GEC, a CSI, a HCGS, and two NNC's. Yes, the NNC's came from ebayer 'Centsles'. I bought a "MS67" and a "MS66" from one of the sellers , expecting to receive coins that graded MS63 or 64. I was right, so I wasn't terribly disappointed, and I wasn't out any real money. Unfortunately, many others certainly bid and buy from these dealers, expecting to receive coins that match the grades on the slab. They will certainly be disappointed, and victimized. I applaud the efforts of those who are working to bring those who commit fraud to justice. I think ebay should be notified of the questions surrounding their sellers too. I'm new to the forum. Is somebody already keeping ebay abreast of the situation?

Hi ORC and welcome to the forum! We're a friendly group and very happy to share expertise and experiences. The ANA maintains that the best method to combat fraud on ebay is to report, report, report auctions to ebay using its "Report this item" hyperlink near the bottom of each auction page under the line "What else can you do?". After clicking on the link, a selective cascading menu is presented. Click on "Fraudulent listings", then on "You suspect a listing is fraudulent, you didn't bid", then "Please click on the continue button". You then click on the "email us" hyperlink. You will be given a block in which to describe your concerns. Sometimes an auction is pulled immediately while at other times, nothing happens. There's too many variables to list here which might predetermine whether or not ebay will take any action. The point is ebay is very reluctant to pull auctions and even more reluctant (read: almost impossible) to discipline problem sellers. However, if enough people report an auction or numbers of auctions, the probabilities are increased that something will be done. It is critical that as many people as possible report fraudulent auctions. Fred

Hi all, For what it is worth, education with a modicum of caution is still the best defense. I have been watching Morgans of similar condition, grading and grader and it appears to me that the ebay buyer is already a wary consumer. The selling prices on ebay are always 1 1/2 to two grades below stated grading, where as on Heritage the pricing seems much tighter. For a rookie like me, I try hard to buy slabs only from the big two TPGs. Jim
