I purchased a St Patricks Farthing from a friend in Ireland,he found this coin metal detecting.I looked in the Red Book and the coin had all the markings of the Farthing but was the size of a halfpenny, has anyone seen one the same as this and how rare are they.I have looked at the Notre Dame website for colonials and the Heritage Auction website ,but to no avail.I have decided to put it up for sale in the Heritage Auction in Houston in December,it was graded by NGC but they did not seem to notice the size difference? all feedback would be appreciated. Thanks to all ,Mike

Hey Mike. They are fairly scarce. They were minted in Dublin in 1674-75. They were brought to the Colonies, most specifically, New Jersey, by Quaker Mark Newby to be used as circulating coinage. There is a Notre Dame site for these. As soon as I get to my laptop, I'll post the link for you. There is an abundance of info there. What I really like about these, is the reeded edge found on some, and the brass "splasher".
Would like to see yours :-)
BTW, the farthing is smaller and shows St. Patrick driving away serpants and various creatures. The half penny is larger, and shows him surrounded by the flock (people standing)

Dave, this coin is not the Farthing size,it is the same size as a St Patricks Halfpenny, that is why I am asking if any one has seen the large planchet version?

Saint Patrick Farthings should be between 24 - 25 mm in diameter and Half Pennies between 27 - 32 mm. The obverse is nearly identical. The reverse is different: Half pennies have legend "Ecce Grex" with people to the left of the figure and weigh more than eight grams. Farthings have legend "Qviescat Plebs" with a church at right of the figure and weigh less than six grams. So your coin has the farthing reverse and is significantly larger than 25mm in diameter but does it weigh signficantly more than six grams?

It would be best if you could tell us what it weighs. It could be a farthing stuck on a halfpenny planchet, or it could just be on a slightly oversized planchet, or it could be a piece with a serious broadstrike that has caused the planchet o spread more than normal. Weight is probably going to be the deciding factor.

Mike, do you recall if the edge was reeded? On the Farthing, it should be.

Hello,
I have just gone over your Farthing Saint patrick on Heritage auction. I of whom managed to make it climb in bid. To give you an idea of its value make you on the following address:

Even corroded VF it is magnificent. I cannot allow to outbid beyond 550 dollars, then I call it to your community. I can say to you that I already possess a Farthing Saint Patrick and that it is a magnificent coin steeped in history.
