I've just been throwing stuff into a jar for years and have recently started to get much more serious about collecting so I started by making an inventory of what I have. I came across this piece and I don't even know if it is a coin.

It is small, 15mm in diameter and weighs less than 1 gram. I've tried describing it in the Numismatic search engine but there just isn't enough specifics to narrow down a search. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

It's not a coin, but exactly what it is we don't know. We've seen these on the forum several times - here's the most recent one - but I don't think we've ever had a satisfying explanation for them. The somewhat crude manufacture (and the fact that they don't seem to be particularly scarce) makes me lean towards assuming that they're play money.

I think you have done what you were meant to do with this 'coin'. You threw it. I think it is a Jeton. The word 'Jeton ' comes from the french verb 'jeter', which means 'to throw'. Jetons were used as counters, although it may not be French.

Are there any good references to jetons?
