i have this 1913 large cent I picked up at a flea market a long time ago when I was a kid... it looks to be lightly silver plated... I cant remember what I used but I tried to see if the entire thing is silver and as you can see from the pictures it only seems to have a thin layer on top...... on the king it looks red from the copper.... thats where it got a bit scratched and the silver came off... I also used a bit of vim to see if it was painted or something (vim can take off all types of stains) and none of the silvery colour came off... so I figured this must be silver on top of copper... now I'm wondering if this is a unique coin plated at the mint or just someone fooling around trying to make a fake?

With a mintage of 5,735,405,I can't find anything that shows a silver plated 1913 large cent. The one I have is copper.Still,it's unique all in it's own.If you're going to collect a set of these, you might want to replace it with a copper 1913.Be careful what you use to try and clean something off your coins, because you can do some serious damage to the value of your coins. :)
Welcome to the forums :) :) sn31.

thx for the welcome..... I never clean my coins since I know that can damage them.... I just scraped this one a bit to see if its copper beneath and it seems to be... I'm not trying to collect the set... I'm simply trying to figure out if this is a unique error from the mint (making it potentially valuable)...

Nope, that's a post-mint silvering job. With the large cent about the size of a quarter, I'd guess it was somebody trying to make a quick 24˘. Quite illegally, of course.

It may not be "real silver" it's plated with, either; it could be some kind of mercury-based wash.
