I am not really much of a cherry picker but when I see a "Bargain Box" (a.k.a. Junk Box or back in the day, Dime Box) I give it a fast look. Every once in a while I can find a small foreign silver coin with a melt value greater than the price asked. If there are Indian head pennies I will check the reverse of all the '08 and '09's if there are any as well as 1912 V's. When I saw a mint mark on this one I wasn't sure at first if it was a D or S. I wasn't about to attract any undue curiosity from the seller by looking at a Junk Box piece with a glass. I figured it was probably a D and worth better than 40 cents anyway. I also refrained from asking if he would take 35 cents for it!

$0.40? You should have tried to chew the seller down a bit.
Now that is really a good find.

Congrats - I'll take that for 40 cents all day!

what do you mean by the illegal 1913? (All I know about it is that "only 5 are known" based on the 2009 Red Book.)

The mint received orders in early December 1912 not to do anything about the nickel for 1913 until the new buffalo design was approved. By that time 1913 V nickel dies had already been made for the coming year (and ten pair of dies had already been shipped to San Francisco.) So at that point they knew there would be no 1913 V nickels made. Someone then struck the five coins in disregard of the orders.

did you ever wonder why there are 2 proofs,2 uncirculated and one circulated?

JV McDermott carried his 1913 around as a pocket piece

Excellent! I've seen plenty of 1912Ds marked as plain 1912 but never an S marked as a D or P. Lots of careless but lucky dealers out there :)
