I was at a coin show yesterday and while waiting my turn at a dealer's "Good Stuff" I picked through a bargain box. 40 cents is what I paid for this old,

V-Cents-1912-S??? worn out nickel.

I watched 2 1912s Liberty nickels go for $100 each at auction the other day.

That's an S. He probably thought it was a D. These S's get to become "blobs" in this grade. Looks a little corroded but so what! Nice pickup :-)

Agreed ..... great score in the bargain bin.

To me this appears to be a genuine 1912-S Liberty nickel ..... total mintage of only 238,000 coins makes it by far the lowest mintage coin of the series ...... forget the illegal 1913.

Interesting factiod is is this coin was almost not made .... minting began on 12/24/1912 and lasted for only four days!

To your example ........ The corrosion (environmental damage in the words of TPG) would prevent this coin from earning a grade in a TPG slab ....... but .... just for fun ....

I would grade this as a 1912-S VG-8 Details ...... paraphrasing now from my David Bowers grading text ...... characteristics of a VG-8 Liberty nickel include:

Obverse: Three or more letters in LIBERTY can be seen. Some hair detail can be seen at the back of the head. The rim is well outlined and shows traces of most or even all dentils.

Reverse: The wreath is bold but in outline form. E PLURIBUS UNUM is readable but weak. The rim has traces of most dentils present.

Sooooo .... without the corrosion ..... Numismedia prices a 'clean' VG-8 1912-S at $173.

I say you did quite well for 40 cents.

David

Wow! That's a great score! Congrats!

I need to spend more time on the bargain bin! I usually just breeze through them, but apparently, it pays to take the time look a little closer!

Awesome find!! I'd be glad to have any grade coin fill the 1912-S space in my V nickel folder. There seems to be no question about the authenticity of this one. Congratulations!!

nickelsearcher, what do you mean by the illegal 1913? (All I know about it is that "only 5 are known" based on the 2009 Red Book.)

Lizzyjo,
Ya got to read up on the 1913, one of the great stories in US coin history.
I woun't ruin it with inaccuracies and the next statement is probably one but
did you ever wonder why there are 2 proofs,2 uncirculated and one circulated?
