Lincoln-Wheat-BIE-Cent

Lincoln-Wheat-BIE-CentWhen I was a kid, there were dealers that sold different mint error coins and I remember a Lincoln Cent being referred to as a BIE cent when there was a lump of copper lodged between the B and E in liberty. Is this still referred to as a BIE cent? Is there any added value to this oddity?

Yes, the guys I know still refer to tham as BIE's. I have never heard of a premium being paid, but that doesn't mean somebody might not give a buck or two. I can tell you I've found about 5 of these in the last 3 months...I just throw them back in with my wheats.

I opened 2 old wheat rolls. The 1953, I purchased as a kid in 1974 but never opened it. There are 7 of the 1953 and the 1957 roll I opened has 18 of them. The 1957 ones have triple die cracks on his head and one across his coat. Is this treated like a Cud?

Cuds appear on the rim and not in the center or away from the rim.

They do carry a premium, there is even a reference book for BIE's. The newer the coin the more collector value it has,a coin from the '80's is going to be more desirable then one from the '50's because there are a lot more BIE's made in the '50's then the '80's.

The BIE Collector's Handbook is from 1972. There was a national club for these things at that time. The club eventually lost its membership due to lack of interest. Basically there is not enough collector interest in these things to warrant premium value, a book, club, or anything of the sort.

We have come to realize (since 1972) that die cracks and chips are a normal - that's right NORMAL - part of die wear and are not uncommon at all. These sorts of minor die breaks are not considered errors, and most guides, etc. completely skip them over because of lack of collector interest.
