hello everyone

my first post here

i have added to my collection a five pence coin dated 2008 with the newer shield reverse but with a strange difference, instead of being minted in the usual coin alignment (heads and tails up the same way) this ones minted in medal alignment (heads up tails down) or 180 degrees off. as it,s like this I cannot determine if its the head or tail side that reulted in this error

now I know that all uk coins since at least the last 100 years have all had a coin aignment to them and although I have had a numerous coins that a few degrees off I have never had anything so far off.
il be honest I have never seen a 5p that was even noticably off!!

i have posted this coin on ebay, seeking anymore out there but have found none as of yet, I have searched the internet and coin mags and found that there one example of a penny from the same year minted in the same style. there is also a call out for this coin and a willing buyer from the manchester area is willing to pay £2000 for an example like this if found (and has been trying for nearly five months now).

if anyone has heard or has one of these it would be great to know.

thanks

Very interesting...as to which die was misaligned, I suspect that The Royal Mint may still have these dies unless they have now been destroyed, and the mint would be your only method of finding out which die was in error.....possibly a note of record was made of it.

Since coins of small denomination are coined in large numbers, I highly doubt that this is anything of great rarity, and there are probably thousands or tens of thousands of others exactly like it.....If it were I, (for 2000 pounds), I would find this willing buyer from Manchester and make him a happy man.

Hopefully someone who knows something at all about modern British coins will speak up here soon.

By the way, welcome here......and I do very much like your screen name...

I'd like to welcome you to the forum as well, mr. delighted!

I don't have any information on the misalignment you're talking about, I just would like to point out that you swapped the terms. The British coins have been minted in the medal alignment, when both obverse and reverse are up the same way. The coin alignment is when they are relatively upside down to each other.

doh!! thanks for the correction

at the moment there has not been another confirmed case of this error. the £2000 is for the penny with this alignment as only one is known to exist if anyone buys coin news its advertised in decembers issue aswell near the back in the wanted section. there is the chance that there is milions of these coins out there but also there is a chance that there isn't, maybe 10 coins were minted, the error spotted and then ammended. then id be very delighted indeed.lol

i have looked about the net on die rotation errors and found that it is very common for up to 5 degrees rotation and these are generally not worth more than face value, anything over 90 degrees and interest starts to play a role but a full 180 degrees off is not found very often, I have never really seen a 5p with any type of rotation more than a degree really.

all I can do is call to collectors and the public to seek more examples of this coin so if anyone reading this has one it would be nice to find out

thanks again

I have heard of at least three being out there. Who knows how many of them there are, as nobody really looks at their 5ps. Maybe there are loads, but no one has so far bothered to look!

I sold one on ebay in late 2008, it made £4.77.
I had 6 in total, all from one mint bag.

This is my rotated 5p. The pencil dot right at the top shows the rotation as flipped over.
