I just picked one up, and got it working all for $40. It takes great pictures, but could be better on coins. Any tips?

Well, first things first. Are you doing the 3 most important things to take good pics - stable camera mount, coin and lens plane parallel, and delayed/remote shutter? Generally speaking, Canon point-and-shoots are decent coin cameras, but compromises in terms of distance from the coin need to be made. You'll find that a problem with your 4MP camera.

Other things you might want to play with are: Zoom use, or lack thereof; some cameras don't like shooting macro when the zoom is used, even if you're supposed to be able to. ISO and white balance settings; keep ISO low - no more than ISO200 - and try both Auto and Tungsten for White Balance, in addition to exploring the Custom setting.

What are you dissatisfied with? Can you post a sample pic?

Thanks for your help. I understand stable camera mount, but I am new to this and don't understand a lot of the terms. Sometime I struggle with lighting. No matter how little light I had, it still came out like this.

This is the best picture of any coin I could get.

If I do it straight on, it is worse.

OK. #1, you must set it straight-on. It's the only way you will ever get the whole coin in focus. The camera doesn't have enough depth of field to keep the whole coin in focus unless the coin and the lens are parallel.

Are you using Macro? On your camera, that's the flower-icon button, top center of the back of the camera. It is capable of focusing as close as 2-1/2" from the coin, probably without using the zoom. Remember, using zoom effectively makes the camera closer to the coin so you can easily zoom too far in for the camera to focus.

Thanks Dave. The Macro helped a lot. Now my reader isn't working so I have to exchange that, then I'll post pics.

Good deal. It's not a great camera, but it's a good camera, and we should be able to come up with decent pics with it.
