I want to share a few exciting finds from my father's collection that I had the opportunity to view for the first time this weekend. He passed away in August of 2009, and I've been looking forward to viewing his collection since then. This weekend turned out to be a good opportunity to "spend some time with Dad." The majority of his collection was made up of heavily circulated coins pulled from circulation in his youth and early adult years in Whitman folders. Most of the silver coinage turned out to be essentially worth melt; obviously the sentimental value outweighs the monetary value. The last set of books we came to were the Indian and Lincoln Cent folders. Upon opening the later year Lincoln Wheat folder we saw a full set of wheats...also all well circulated brown coins...neat, but nothing that looked to be of great value. Then we opened the 1909-> folder, and as is common with those early folders, out fell a few coins. Laying loose before me was this: Well that's cool...let's have a closer look at that: It's a little more interesting now...what's the other side hold? WHAT IS THAT? Very cool...I never would have thought; it was without a doubt pulled from circulation, and not in great condition...I'd put it as a VG8. Are you guys interested in what else I found?

Sorry about your loss, but I'm sure he wouldn't have it any other way.
Absolutely we want "the rest of the story"!

I thought you might... Of course after finding that it was definitely a great day! But of course my eye continued down the book to the other hole that stood out in my memory, is there a 14-d? Bummer about that gouge in his head...but clearly another pretty sweet find. Also there were the 1909-VDB, 1909-S, and 1909 and the 1931-S.

Well...after catching my breath on those finds, and safely tucking them away into 2x2's we opened up the Indian Head cent folder. I know very little about the IHC's other than that there are some key dates; but I did know that among those key's was that little number the 1909-S, sure enough; Dad had one of those too: Edit - Guess you may have to trust me that there's an S on there. :)

We figured we were about done for the day after that one. Fortunately...not quite yet. We came across a Velveeta cheese box with 2x2's in it...understand, my father was a circulation collector. It surprised me when I noted these all had prices on them. As it turns out this was a run of IHC's from 1859-1888 excluding only the '63, '77 and '84. Of course they were all circulated; and too worn to identify any varieties; but a very nice run with duplicates of many years. There were also some others including a 1908-S IHC, and this: Another 1909-S Indian...that I'd put at VG-8 but was labeled Good and had a price of $63 on it. Anyone have some old Redbooks to tell me when that might have been? And give me an idea of when he may have purchased the lot?

Also in that box was this (the most attractive find of the bunch, condition-wise IMHO): I'd grade that one a VF-20; but was labeled F+ with a price of $29. Beyond that...a nice run of S and D mint cents from the teens and 20's including: A second 1914-D! So...the exciting finds of the day included: 1909-S VDB 1914-D x 2 1909-S Lincoln 1909-S Indian x 2 1908-S Indian And a nice run of Indians. The rest of his sets were either very incomplete (20%) for the early types or heavily circulated for the later types. It will be great fun working to finish the work he started in the other sets as well as enjoying these very cool finds.
